In NAXOS, a research trip becomes an encounter with a parallel life. The central character finds himself free of the responsibilities he left behind, until an unexpected romance makes the choice between those two lives impossible to avoid.
The island is present at very different scales in these frames. A doorway opens onto the sea; two people share the confined space of a boat; a café table brings the world back to the distance between faces. The sequence moves between open water and places of conversation.
At the Portara, the figure and the ancient doorway meet against the evening sky. It is an image of a threshold, at the centre of a film about what it might mean to cross one.
Written and directed by John Farrelly, from a story by Tom Kerrisk and Farrelly, NAXOS brings together Kerrisk, Maira Gravani, Angeliki Kalovyrna and Moya Farrelly. The photographs here are frames from the finished film.
