Difriúil follows a young Gaelic footballer in rural 1980s Ireland as he confronts expectations around him and his own fears. The film’s questions of identity and belonging take shape in recognisable places: the pitch, the shoreline and the spaces where friends can be alone.
The stills move from a group in play to two figures at the water’s edge. Open landscapes remain present throughout, while the number of people in the frame changes. A bright afternoon on the beach gives way to the deep blue of evening.
